Unfortunately, we will still have another short and social distancing ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend but please practice social distancing as there will be lots of room. There will be no parade or potluck afterwards at the Legion. Wreaths will be pre laid unless special circumstances or health unit limitations have been lifted. Please gather at the cenotaph prior to 11:00 AM. If you would like to purchase a wreath for Remembrance Day, you can contact poppy chair Rose Lamingman at 613 269- 4402 or by email rlamingman@hotmail.com.
The Poppy campaign started Friday October 29th, 2021 and runs until Remembrance Day November 11th. We ask that you wear a poppy to remember our Veterans who fought for this country and still are.
Poppies are free but you can donate into a poppy box, they will be located at numerous businesses.
The Tallman family generously donated the funds to create the “Walk of Honor” at the cenotaph. R.W. Eagle Carpentry made the crosses so a huge thank you to Ron Eagle. We encourage you to take the “Walk of Honor” at the cenotaph and read the names of the young men from Merrickville Wolford that went to war and never returned as they made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.
Poppies signify Remembrance because of the delicate but resilient red flowers that grew on WW1 battle grounds in Flanders fields, despite the devastating effect of the war on the soil. Poppy seeds lie dormant in the soil for many years. They only become active and germinate when the soil becomes disturbed. Red poppies do not symbolize bloodshed.
This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Poppy. The Legion has some Commemorative Poppy Pins at cost of $10.00 each. We also have ‘Lest We Forget’ lawn signs for $20.00 each, please contact President Lee Horning for these at 613 269-3234.
